Hike #36 - 186.5 miles

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My seventeen year old grandson Anthony came for a three week visit.  He hasn't been here in about 10 years so we did tourist stuff and some hiking.  The first hike was to Kaena Point.

First stop was the Moi Hole just past the end of the paved road.  During big winter wave season the Moi Hole can be a Killer.  Check out this video

Leaving the Moi Hole behind we continued on to the point.  Along the way we could see an upside down shell of a boat that washed up on the rocks.

The "trail" to the point is along the old rail road right of way.

We passed the "arch" on the way.

Everyone was taking pictures.  I don't know what happened to mine.  Those you see today were taken by Dan and Stanka.

That's Anthony w/the blue head gear, Tony w/his Mexican? hat, and Stanka w/the big smile.  Guess who's the dude in the yellow trunks.  LOL

The "gang of four".   :-)

The wide road bed was washed away at this point years ago.  End of the line for wheeled machines.

Near the end of WW II the military began to build a tunnel to mount some big guns incase the Japanese came back.  They never finished it.

This machine is on tracks and we think might have been to move the ammunition around.

One of Oahu's hikers Leslie Merrell died back in March doing what we and he all love, HIKING.  While climbing a very steep cliff a boulder came loose and Les and the boulder took a fall of over 100'.  Less did not survive the fall.  Some of his friends built this memorial in the tunnel as Les was the first of our group to find it.

Tour of the tunnel is over and we continue out to the point.

A motorcycle/4x4/dog/cat/rat proof fence was built across the end of the island to protect native plants and animals living and growing on the point.

This albatross chick was just about 10 feet from the trail and was happy to pose for the camera.

When visiting the point I always visit this tidal pool to cool off.  Quite often there are monk seals basking in the sun at the point, but not today.

Our adventure over we spotted this chopper flying low over the Kaneana Cave.  Turns out there is some kind of invasive grass growing there and they had a man in a basket below the chopper spraying poison.
