Some time this past Summer Dan and his friend Gene cut a trail up a ridge they called Knife Edge. Knife Ridge leads up to the summit of Kamaileunu Ridge. At about 2600' they hit a very nasty cliff and decided that a rope would be needed to go farther. Gene did explore a trail on the left of the cliff and did make it to the top, but it is to dangerous for most hikers. A few weeks later they went up a ridge in Wai`anae Valley known to hikers as the Hunter's Ridge. It earned this name as it is the one most of the local goat hunters use to get to the top of Kamaileunu Ridge. This hardy group then worked their way down Knife Edge to the top of the cliff. There they secured a stainless steel cable that I donated. From the cable they attached a sturdy rope and climbed down to the base of the cliff. Not wanting to leave the rope in a spot exposed to strong winds and weather, they pulled it down, but at the same time pulled up a small nylon rope. The idea was next time someone came up from Makaha they could tie a climbing rope to the small nylon rope and pull it in to place. Here is a Google Earth view of Knife Edge Ridge looking east.
And another looking west:
Last another view looking right at the edge of the ridge.
