I'm now standing just above the Monkey Pod tree, on the edge of the drainage ditch. You can see the long narrow terraces I've cut into the hill side and the untouched area above. When I terrace I alternate with one pretty narrow for walking on and then one wider for planting. The lowest one here is a "walking" terrace and the upper a planting terrace. The planting terrace will get wider as I cut more into the bank.
In the next picture I widened the terrace in the middle of the picture a little and cut grass above it getting ready for yet more work with my pick and rake.
By the end of the day on July 11th I created one more walking terrace and began cutting a deeper planting bed above it. Notice the upper planting terrace has some rocks holding up its lower edge.
