Before my battery went dead I was able to take two more pictures.  These are around the "nose" of Small Waimalu Ridge.  I've been told this is eaten if cooked, like adding it to stews.

There were maybe a dozen small streams coming down off Small Waimalu Ridge and crossing the ditch trail as we headed deeper and deeper into the valley.

The battery went dead after the above photo.  Others caught up w/me and we began clearing branches from  guava and Hau trees that were blocking the trail.  When we go to the first crossing of the main stream we found that although it was making "big noise" it wasn't really very deep.  None of the 7 crossings were much higher than our knees.  After the 3rd crossing we really had our work cut out for us as the Hau was very thick.  We (6 of us) spent at least an hour, cutting w/hand saws and loppers , clearing from the 3rd to the 7th crossing where the hike ends an a nice long pool good for swimming if the sun is shinning.
