Twenty Five to Thirty years ago Mike and I discovered a "structure" that we believed was a pre-contact house site. Some years later while touring on the Big Island, Mike was at a major heiau and off to the side a few hundred feet was a structure just like the one we found in Wai`anae. It was labeled as the Kahuna's House. This is what we were looking for today.
We had wandered around for a few hours and could not find it. Come on after 30 years and a few brush fires the area was very different from what we "knew". Mike spotted this huge Pohaku and we knew the "site" was very close. The rock sitting on top of the Pohaku is in the same location it was 30 years ago. Spooky huh?????
Low and behold, there it was just, well almost just as Mike and I saw it oh so long ago. The vegetation was different due to the many brush fires that burned just about everything alive in the area in past 10 years. Gene took these pictures of what we were looking for. It's hard to make out exactly what it is, but what we have is an almost rectangle about 50 feet by 35 feet. Inside are two levels and one was paved w/flat stones a long time ago. I guess you noticed that there is not much info to exactly where this site is located other than it is Wai`anae Valley. We plan to keep it secret for the present.
The low wall of the structure must be at least 6 feet high and about 4-5 feet wide on top where we are standing.
The fires burned off the trees that were there and the grass has grown in and pretty much hides the site.
