Hiking on the WST is much different than hiking on the KST (Ko`olau Summit Trail). Since it gets much less rain it is not as overgrown, much less muddy, and in many place much wider. Here is a stand of Cook Island Pines off in the distance. We will be hiking thru them.
The mission of NC here in Hawai`i is to preserve native Hawaiian plants and animals. Here they have built a fence around a huge area of hundreds of acres to keep feral pigs out. The pigs do much damage to native plants and to the animals that need these plants to survive.
