We parked by what was once an old navy communications building and hiked for about 30 minutes to the end of the paved road at Mauna Kapu. There Mabel reminded us of what needed to be done.
From the end of the road we climb a short set of cement stairs and then climb to the top of Mauna Kapu and walk thru a bamboo forest at the top. The trail then switch backs down the west side of Mauna Kapu. Here Dusty leads the way on one of the switch back sections.
