One of the more open sections of the trail. There were large areas of "dead" awa puhi or ginger along the trail. In the winter the tops turn brown and die back. In the spring growth will return, and in summer they'll be in full flower.

At crossing # 21, (11:30 a. m.) I saw some debris from the plane crash down stream of the crossing. Seeing the metal I got confused and thought this was crossing 23 and the I had just lost count. Upon announcing that from now on it would be UP HILL all the way, Bill said that was all he was going to do. He was going to dance that night and needed his leg muscles in top shape.
