After leaving the guava patch we decended a slight slope into a valley and the turning right began walking up the valley floor. After a few minites the trail leaves the valley floor and follows the ridge to the right of the valley all the way to 3 Poles.

This picture shows a mature Hawaiian Koa tree. What appears to be crescent shaped leaves are really modified leaf stems which function as leaves.

Here is a close up of the cycle shape "leaves" of the Hawaiian Koa. Also can be seen the tiny finely divided juvinal leaves.
