Back in January and again in March of 2005 I went w/two friends to visit the Poamoho Tunnel. The tunnel diverts water from Poamoho Stream to Kaukonahua Stream. It was built long ago so more water could flow into Lake Wilson to irrigate sugar cane. Some where in the back of my mind I remember going there in 1963 while I was stationed at the Navy Receiver Site above Whitmore village. We use to go in the Poamoho entrance and exit the Kaukonahua side.
Anyway, when we arrived at the entrance in January of 2005 we found that the diversion dam had silted up and the entrance to the tunnel was blocked by debris. Blocked so much that the stream level was much higher now than in the 60's when sugar workers kept it open. Now the tunnel floor is about 20' below ground level. Last Sunday I went back again w/two friends. Michael and his brother Kevin who was visiting the islands from his home on the mainland. We went to the Kaukonahua side of the tunnel and walked thru to the Poamoho side. Along the way, about a 10 minute hike in the tunnel I placed a Geocache.
