This palm is native to northeastern Argentina, southernmost Brazil and northern Uraguay. It is the tallest of the Butias and is showing a silver/gray color as it matures. It is planted in full sun and seems to love it here in Wai`anae.
I was sent a few seeds from a friend in South America. Only one sprout survived the seedling stage and it went in the ground in 2005 under semi-sun conditions. After 2 years I cut down the shade and it is loving the hot Wai`anae sun.
Here you can see the growth from 2005 to 2007.
