Because the yard is on a bit of a slope I divided the bed along the fence into two terraces to keep them level.  I dumped in a bit over a yard of compost from our local recycling center.  The cost is about $28 a yard.  Then I planted a bunch of Rhapis excelsa that I've had in the green house for over a year.

Here is a panorama from the stairs.  That small tree in the left bed is a Brachychyton acerifoliens, or Australian Flame Tree, which should shade the yard in about 8 years.
