The peak in the distance once housed the radar antennas for the Nike anti-aircraft missiles that once protected the southern end of the island. The hikers that began at Makapu`u would arrive there and then descend a very steep and dangerous path to the low point the climb to the lunch spot were I took this picture.
Here is a close up from the above picture. Now you can see the hikers carefully descending the rocky slope.
