The pack trail goes thru a valley I like to call Boulder Valley or perhaps I should say Pohaku Gulch! I just checked "Place Names of Hawaii" and it says the gulch is named "Ka`aikukui" which means candlenut food. Go figure that one out.
What is interesting, is on the U.S.G.S. maps it is called "Ka`aikukai". No such animal in the Place Names book. Me thinks some one made a mistake.
